Sept.1 Labor Day - Monday - Enjoy the day relaxing, eating, hiking, or just good old fashion conversation with your fellow hikers and friends. The covered - dish luncheon will be at 1:00 P.M. The hike will be impromptu so come with some of your ideas of where you like to hike in that area. 

SEPT. 7 - SHORT HIKE: Wildwood Lake Sanctuary in Harrisburg...see the wonders of nature found in the city. Over 150 species of birds call Wildwood home. We’ll follow a 4-mile looping trail with views of lake, wetlands, woods, meadow and remnants of PA Canal. A few moderate hills and combination of blacktop, gravel, wood chip, boardwalk and soil trails. Some sections may be muddy, depending on recent weather. Meet to carpool at 9:00 am at Masonic Drive location off of I-83 exit 10, adjacent to Rutters Farm Store. Carpool donation $4.00. Hike leader: Donna Brander 717-417-2898. Stop for lunch after hike will be an option.

SEPT. 7 - LONG HIKE: 10 to 12 miles in State Game Lands 145 near Mt Gretna and the Governor Dick Fire Tower. We will hike on the Horse Shoe trail and 2 loop trails in the Game Lands. Bring good hiking boots and lunch. Be prepared for conditions, bring plenty of water. An ice cream stop will be planned. Meet at 8:30 AM in the Boscov’s lot at the Galleria Mall, near the Road House Restaurant. Hike fee is $6.00. Hike leader Skip Newcomer (717) 285-0146.

SEPT. 14 - MEDIUM HIKE: (MDT_SERIES) 7-mile hike from Apollo Park to JPJ Cabin. We missed out with this scenic part of the trail because of having hiked it quite often, but we decided to do it to celebrate the recently acquired land and new Parking Lot. There will be a hot dog roast at the cabin after the hike. Meet at York County School of Tech at 1:00 P.M. the Cabin at 1:30 P.M. please call Jim or Joyce if you are planning to hike and or attend the roast so we have a count. (717) 252- 3784 or

SEPT. 21 - SHORT HIKE: The 4 mile hike will be at Kelly's Run in the Holtwood Preserve, with an approximate one-mile return to the cars. There are two or three stream crossings and an occasional rock climbing. Meet at York County School of Technology just off Rt.74, at 12:00 noon. The drive will take approx. 40 minutes. Bring hydration, ambulatory assisting devices and sustenance if desired. The carpool donation will be$3.50. Questions call Bill Anderson (717) 993.2828 Leave a message. SEPT. 21 - LONG HIKE: (MDT-SERIES) Those of us who have been hiking the trail have been enjoying the variety it has to offer. The next hike will be on map#8 & 9 leaving Elk Neck State Forest and continue to Hazelwood Dr, around a 9 mile hike. Carpool Donation will be $6.00. Be sure to wear good hiking boots for we cover all kinds of terrain, water and your lunch. Meet at York County School of Tech, just off of Rt. 74 at 8:00 A.M. Stopping for dinner will be an option. SEPT. 26-28 KTA WEEKEND: Annual Meeting, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Dingmans Ferry, Pa. Go on the web site for registration and information. www.kta-hike.org (Registration deadline Sept. 8th)

SEPT. 28 - MEDIUM HIKE: We will do at least 6 miles (more if folks are up to it) in the Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area. Some steep slopes. Bring lunch, water, hiking-boots. Meet at 8:30 AM at Rutters off I-83, former exit 10 (N. George Street). Carpool donation $4.75. Hike leader: Deborah Slawson at or (717)5-2561. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Only two months remain before our annual Turkey Dinner and Hike. Volunteers are needed to cook three Turkeys plus all the fixings and we can't forget dessert. JUNE BOARD MEETING: At the July 28, 2008 meeting the YHC Board passed a resolution raising the carpool contribution from $.07 to $.10 per mile. This will be effective starting October 1, 2008.

Phyllis Morley would like to remind all hike leaders to forward the sign-up sheet to her so that all the new hikers will get the correct credit for the 30 miles for membership. Oct 17-19-Susquehannock Trail Weekend- This will be the last set of hikes on the Susquehannock Trail. We will drive up on Friday, stay at a bed and breakfast in Coudersport, hike both Saturday and Sunday and then return home. Limited rooms left.
