AUGUST 1 Short Hike: Approx 6 miles of country roads in the Stoverstown area, beginning and ending at Sonnewald Natural Foods. Meet at Adams Electric at 1 PM. Sturdy shoes and lots of water. Wear your favorite sunhat – decorated for summer! Hike leader: Rich Burrill, 717-225-2009 or .

 

AUGUST 1 Long Hike: About 10 miles in and out on the Mason-Dixon Trail. We'll visit Lock 12, Peavine Island, Mill Creek, Holtwood Dam and Oakland Run. Bring lunch, water, hiking boots & water shoes. Opportunities for wading at lunch and near the end. Meet at York Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 8:30 AM Carpool Fee: $2.50. Hike leader: Tim Schmidt, 717-235-5940

AUGUST 8 Medium Hike: Come on a 4-5 mile (or maybe more) stream walk. I mean "in the stream". We'll look under rocks for bugs, study how the channel is made, and maybe see a fish or two. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes with socks that can get wet. Hiking poles are a good idea too. Prepare to get totally wet. Bring lunch in a sealed baggy and water. If you cannot afford to lose it, don't bring it. Stream will depend on water levels at the time. Bring something waterproof to sit on in the car on the way home. AUGUST 15 Long Hike: Conestoga Trail Long Hike: about 12 miles on the Conestoga Trail from the Holtwood Arboretum. This is a rugged, but scenic section that includes Kelly's Run, the Pinacle, Wind Cave, the town of Pequea and the campground. There will be many ups and downs along the river hills in Lancaster County with scenic views and streams. Bring plenty of water, hiking shoes and a lunch. Meet at the Boscov's East Parking in the Galleria Mall at 8:00 AM. Carpool fee:$5. Leader: Bernie Frick - 843-6675 or

AUGUST 21 (Saturday) JPJ Work Day: Come on out and help get JPJ Cabin ready for the fall season. Jobs available for everyone inside and out. There is big work and little work. Anyone like to paint? Wear old clothes and bring lunch. Meet at JPJ at 9:30 AM. Coffee and iced tea will be served with homemade brownies! Last time we were done by 1 PM. It’s a fun day and we get stuff done. If anyone wants to carpool please call Sarah.

AUGUST 24 Moonlight Short Hike: 4 miles on the rail trail starting at Hanover Junction Station going toward Gladfelter Station. Enjoy the farmlands & beauty of the rail trail. No hills-easy terrain. Bring flashlight, bug spray & boots. Meet at Adams Electric 7:00pm. Linda Bean -764-1091 Leader. Carpool Fee $1.

AUGUST 27 Trails Committee Meeting: Discuss trails issues and plans for next year. Meet at the Hooper farm at 7:15 pm. For questions call 252-3784 or

AUGUST 29 Long Hike: A moderate 10 mile hike on the AT from Caledonia Park to Tumbling Run Shelter. There is a nice view from Chimney Rocks looking over South Mountain and has varied terrain. If we have rain, the ending at Tumbling Run will be nice with running water. If there is any interest, there can be a stop at the winery on the way home. Will need sturdy hiking shoes/boots, lunch and water. Meet at Adams Electric at 8 a.m. Carpool Hike fee $4.00. Contact Tom or Phyllis Morley 764-6822 or .

Thursday Work Trips: Every Thursday a group meets to do trail work.  Call Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 or for time and place.

 

Activities at A.T. Museum, Pine Grove Furnace State Park: August 8 at 1 PM. Presentation by the Barefoot Sisters, authors of Southbound and Walking Home, recounting their adventures on two back-to-back thru hikes of the A.T.---yes, going barefoot! More info at www.atmuseum.org.

 

HIKE LEADERS NEEDED FOR SEPT. 8th Med., 12th, Short or Med., Sept 19, Long, Please respond too  , or call 717-252-3784. Sept. is a nice time to be out in the woods and on the 
trails, so get brave and volunteer. I will help you thru the process of leading and finding a hike.

 

Keystone Trails Association (KTA) Susquehanna Super Hike: September 11: 26 miles on trails along the Susquehanna River. Volunteers are needed to help with this event. York Hiking Club will host a spaghetti dinner for KTA staff and event committee on Friday evening, September 10 at JPJ cabin. To help with food, serving, etc. contact Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967 or . Training Hike: Sunday, August 22, 2010: East side of Norman Wood Bridge to Pequea Creek Campground, 11.8 miles. Meet at Pequea Creek parking lot along Rt. 324, between Martic Forge and village of Pequea (campground is across Pequea Creek) at 10:00 AM. Rain or shine. Bring water and lunch. KTA Fall Meeting: OCT.1-3, Milroy, PA. Go on www.kta-hike.org, for information on the meeting & hikes.

 

Advance announcement: Oct 9-10 Away weekend. The start of a series of hikes on the Mid-State Trail. Stay at a motel in Lawrenceville and hike the northern end of the trail. Contact Jim Hooper 252-3784 or for reservations.

 

Our club has a CARD COMMITTEE: If you know someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc, you may notify Sally Zimmerer at (717) 235-3158 and she will send them a card.

 

Reminder, anyone wishing to receive their newsletter by e-mail instead of by postal mail (we have saved postage costs keeping dues down), please forward your e-mail address to Bernie Frick to sign up.

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
