to the York Hiking Club Newsletter, a complete monthly listing of hikes,
work trips, special events and announcements.
All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.
A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike. This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

directions as follows: From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for

January 1: Happy New Year!
January 8: PORK & SAUERKRAUT HIKE - Join us for the traditional Pork & Sauerkraut event at JPJ. John Seville will lead us on an approximate 5 mile circle hike from the cabin at 10:30 a.m. As usual, there is rugged terrain in this area, but the hike will be at a comfortable pace. Good boots & water and a positive outlook for the New Year are all that are required! Once again Diane McCoy will be preparing the meal. The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m to hikers & non-hikers alike. Reservations are required & must be made by 9:00 p.m. January 5, & once made, must be paid. Cost for the meal will tentatively be $4.00 and $1.00 cabin fee for members & $ 2.00 for non-members. Call Diane at (717) 852-7570 to reserve.
January 9: Monday – Full Moon
January 13: Covered dish and program - York Township Recreation Building at 6:30 PM. Please bring a dish to share. Having your own place setting is appreciated, but paper goods will be available. A slide program on a Colorado Raft Trip through the Grand Canyon will be presented with photos by the Tateosians, Hoopers and Fricks.
January 15: Short - Lancaster Central Park, 4-5 mile loop. Hike partially follows the Conestoga River and includes some hills, a covered bridge, and crosses an 18th century farm. Bring water, snacks, and hiking boots. Meet at
Boscov's East Parking, Galleria Mall, near Texas Roadhouse at 12:30 P.M. Carpool fee is $2.00. Leader: Jean Mundis (717) 792-0885 or (717) 521-9531.
January 15: Long - 10-11 miles in French Creek State Park, hiking on park trails & also the Horseshoe Trail, featuring Hopewell Lake, Hopewell Fire Tower, & Hopewell Furnace with moderate climbing. There are options to shorten the hike for those who wish to do so. Bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. We will leave the east side meeting place

January 20: Trails Committee Meeting: Meet at the Hooper farm at 7:15 pm to plan this year’s work hikes and to consider other trail issues. Everyone is invited. Contact Jim Hooper (717) 252-3784 or

January 22: Medium to Long Hike - Take a brisk hike at Hashawa County Park thru woods, fields, pine groves and along streams. Approximately 7 miles with options for more. Some steep but short hills and trails may be muddy. We will visit the resident bald eagle and other rehabilitated raptors. Bring boots, water, and lunch. Meet

January 24: Board of Directors meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the home of Tom Morley, 2640 Wexford Lane, York. Phone (717) 764-6822.
January 29: Short - Approximately 5 miles around Rocky Ridge Park. Meet at the first parking lot on the left at Rocky Ridge at 1:30. Bring water and snack, if you wish. Wear good walking shoes or hiking boots. Leaders: Jerry and Chris Broome (717) 757-6357
January 29: Long - Approximately 11 miles on the Raccoon Trail and the AT in the Michaux Forrest. Moderate to strenuous climbs due to rocks. Good vistas if the weather is cooperative, some small stream crossings. Come with us and get rid of that January cabin fever. Bring sturdy footwear, lunch and water. Car pool fee $5.00. Meet at
