June 6 (Saturday) - Medium hike along the scenic Gunpowder River in MD. 7-mile, "lollypop" hike, several ups and downs, some rock scrambling. Bring good boots, water and lunch. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 9:30 AM. Hike leader: Kim Jones at . Carpool: $3.

June 7 - AT Work Trip We will be clearing the brush on the AT and other work as required. The exact work will be dependent one what is accomplished on May 30. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8:30 am. Bring work gloves, boots, water and lunch. No fee. Call Jim Hooper (252-3784 or ) if you have questions.

June 14 - Short hike in Susquehannock State Park, Lancaster County. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:00 PM in the parking lot facing South Queen St. (Rte 74), near the former main entrance. This will be a 3.5- 4 mile circle hike with some steep inclines and breath-taking river overlook. Bring water and sturdy footwear. Hike Leader Sandy Grove (244-9122), Carpool: $2.

June 14 - Long hike 10 - mile hike along the Mason-Dixon Trail from Lock 12 to JPJ (Otter Creek Campground). Dramatic views of the river and nesting eagles. Joint hike of our club and AMC-Delaware Valley Chapter. Join us for a covered-dish picnic at JPJ cabin following the hike. Barbeque provided; bring veg/salad, desert or drinks. Meet 9 AM at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) or 9:30 AM at JPJ cabin. Bring lunch, snacks and water. Prepare for very rocky terrain, strenuous climbs; last several miles on roads. June 21 - Short hike with bike option Meet at Nixon County Park at 1:30 PM in the Nature Centers lower parking lot. Walk will be a leisurely 2-4 miles on park trails and a visit to the Nature Center. Afterwards we can bike; option 1) the Hollow Creek Green Way, a 1-mile course neighboring the county park and option 2) Move base camp, by driving 2 miles to the Glatfelter Station Parking Area along the Heritage Rail Trail, where we can do maybe a 10-mile ride or do both. Include footwear appropriate for each activity, water and snacks. Helmets are recommended for cycling. Leader Skip Newcomer at (717) 285-0146. Carpool from Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) is available for you and your bike IF you call Skip in advance (Carpool: $1).

June 28 - Short hike cancelled. No hike leader.


June 28 - Long hike About 12 rugged miles on the Mason-Dixon Trail along the Susquehanna River from the boat launch near Shank's Mare at Long Level to the JPJ Cabin near Otter Creek. This will be challenging due to the many climbs and descents along the river hills, but rewarding for the river views, gorges, eagle sightings and general wild and natural state of the area. Meet at the Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) parking lot at 8:00 AM. Carpool: $5. Bring lunch, suitable footwear and drinking water. Hike leader, Bernie Frick at (717) 843-6675 or

Message from JPJ House Committee: We are in need of bunk bed/cot mattresses in good condition for the JPJ Cabin. Call Sarah (717) 741-2652.

Hike leaders needed for July: July 4: Cook and Hike Leader at JPJ Cabin, July 5: Short and Long Hikes, July 12: Short/Medium Hike, July 19: Short and Long Hikes, July 26: Short/Medium Hike. Contact Bill Anderson at 717.993.2828 before June 10. He’d love to hear from YOU! 

Thursday Work Trips: Come join the group that does trail work, usually on the MDT. Call Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 for time and place. 

KTA Susquehanna Super Hike: September 12, 26 miles on trails along the Susquehanna River beginning at JPJ cabin. For information on the hike: www.kta-hike.org. Since the hike begins at our club cabin, we need volunteers to help at JPJ and along the hike route. Contact: Club president Tim Schmidt at (717) 235-5940 or .

Message from the Board: To protect the privacy of our club members, use of the club’s newsletter email list can only be used for official club business and with prior approval of the board. Contact club president Tim Schmidt with any questions or concerns. 

Hike leaders remember to contact Phyllis Morley immediately after your hike to report number of club members and guests who were on the hike and the number of miles hiked. If the hike is cancelled, still let her know. Email or phone 764-6822 or snail mail a copy of the sign-in sheet to 2640 Wexford Lane, York, PA 17404 -anyway will do!!!

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
