to the York Hiking Club Newsletter, a complete monthly listing of hikes,
work trips, special events and announcements.
All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.
A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike. This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

for a hike is only if one Carpools. Please volunteer to lead a hike or two
for this year's schedule! Our new place for meetings/events is inside the York Township Recreation Building,
directions as follows:
March 7 Short Hike: Oregon Ridge Annual Pancake Breakfast and Hike. Meet Vo-Tec
(York County High School of Technology) at 10 AM and follow the aroma of maple syrup to the O.R. lodge for sausage, "all you can eat" pancakes, coffee/tea, O.J., milk for $6/person. Funds raised support the nature center and park. We will then search for early signs of spring on a 4-5 mile hike. Expect mud, stream crossings and a few short hills. Also explore the nature center and learn the history behind maple sugaring. Bring boots, water and extra money for the gift shop, raffles, etc.

March 1 Short Hike: Brogueville and the Muddy Creek area. 5 miler in and around the "metropolis" of lightly traveled paved and gravel roads with only gradual ups and downs encountered. Meet at the York
Vo-Tec (York
County High School of Technology) 1:30 P.M. Carpool fee: $2.00. Or you can meet at 1:50 P.M. at St. James Lutheran Church, which is about 2 miles south of Rt. 74S on Laurel Rd. The church is on a hill to the left. Leader: John Seville at 717-244-6769.
March 1 Long Hike: Approx. 13 miles in Swatara State Park & Gameland #80. Hiking on the old railroad grade & the A.T. featuring the old Waterville Bridge over Swatara Creek, a 1,000’ climb up Blue Mountain & a stop at the William Penn Shelter. Bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. Leave

March 6 Covered Dish and Slides 6:30 PM Bring a dish to share and join us at the York Township Recreation Building. Having your own place setting is appreciated, but paper goods will be available. The slides will be of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, from Jasper to Banff during 11 days in Aug/Sept 2008. Follow the trip taken by 8 of our club members. Questions: Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967.
March 8 Medium Hike: State Game Lands 242, Rossville. A circuit hike of 6 miles. The trail will be a surprise to both of us. Wear good boots and bring your lunch and water.

March 15 Short Hike: Lake William at William H. Kahn County Park. 4 to 5 mile circuit hikes around trails with some hills, but mostly even terrain. Water, snacks and boots recommended. Meet at
Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:30 P.M.

March 15 Long Hike: Middle Creek Wildlife Area and Horseshoe Trail. 8 miles from Lancaster County on the Horseshoe Trail into the Wildlife Area (stopping at the Visitors Center) and then back onto the Horseshoe Trail. This will be a strenuous hike including a couple of significant climbs. We’ll keep a moderate pace so that all can enjoy this hike. Wear good hiking boots, bring lunch and water. Leave the east meeting place

March 21 (Saturday) JPJ WORK DAY: Come out and help get JPJ Cabin ready for fun activities! Jobs available for everyone inside and out. Wear old clothes and bring lunch. Meet at JPJ at 9:30 AM. March 22 Medium Hike: Mason Dixon Series and Meeting. Meet at 8:30 AM at the
Boscov's East Parking lot or 9 AM at the Wrightsville boat launch. The hike will go from the boat launch to the big parking lot on Long Level just short of Fishing Creek. Approx. 7 miles, including the Murphy's Hollow to High Point
relocation, two proposed new relocations, and the Devils Hole section. Some bushwhacking. Meeting at the Hooper’s farm at 2 PM.

March 28 (Saturday) Long Hike: Mason-Dixon Trail/Holtwood Preserve. 10-mile hike along the Mason-Dixon trail from Lock 12 to JPJ (Otter Creek Campground). Dramatic views of the river and nesting eagles. Joint hike of our club and AMC-Delaware Valley Chapter. Optional covered-dish supper at JPJ cabin follows hike. Meet 9:30 am at JPJ cabin. Bring lunch, snacks and water. Prepare for very rocky terrain, strenuous climbs; last several miles on roads. Leader: Jim Hooper (717) 252-3784 or

March 29 AT Work Hike: Spring cleanup on the AT and the shelter as required and boundary work. If required, we will go chainsaw work. Meet 8:30 AM at the
North

ANNOUCEMENTS:
Volunteer to assist the A.T. Museum any day/time during March in Harpers Ferry by helping to label and scan the photos taken from 1980 to the present of A.T. long-distance hikers when they reach the headquarters.
