All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

May 1, 2, 3 - HOOPER AWAY WEEKEND: Thunder Swamp weekend Hike on the Thunder Swamp Trail Saturday and Sunday and stay in a motel in East Stroudsburg. Contact Jim Hooper by April 27 if you plan to go.

May 2 Short/Medium Hike - Six-mile circle hike at Tumbling Run. (Mildly strenuous), bring good shoes, water and a snack. Meet at Adams Electric parking lot at 10 AM. Cost $2.50 Hike leaders Frank and Mary Phipps (cell # 818-8035).

MAY 10 Mother’s Day Medium Hike - The 7 mile section of the Appalachian Trail that our YHC maintains will be the location of this hike. We will start at the top and it is all downhill from there! We will see beautiful views and visit the shelter. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 9:30 AM. Bring drinking water and a trail lunch. The terrain is rocky so good hiking boots are needed. Car-pool $3.50. Sarah and Lou Tateosian 741-2652.

May 17 Short/Medium Hike - A 5 to 5.5 mile hike in Spring Valley Park. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology). At 1:00 pm. Car Pool fee: $2.50. Hike leader: Henry Loudermilk

 

May 17 Long Hike AT - Approx. 10 miles on the A.T. beginning in Harpers Ferry to Gathland State Park. 1 elevation gain of approx. 1,000 ft over 2 miles. Featuring great views from Weverton Cliffs and visit to Ed Garvey Shelter. Minor ups and owns along the ridgeline of South Mt. Meet at Adams Electric at 8 AM. Bring lunch, water, boots, etc. Optional dinner stop. Car Pool Fee: $6. Hike Leader: Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967. 

May 24, 25 Memorial Day Weekend at JPJ - The weekend will include a hike on Monday lead by John Seville at 10:30 AM hike from JPJ. John will lead a 4 or 5 mile mystery, circle hike, giving hikers some time to rest before the 1:30 PM meal. Please bring a dish to share. Call John at (717) 244-6769 with any questions.


May 30 AT Work Trip - This year we are trying something different for our annual brush clearing on the AT. The last two years, we have failed to get the entire trail opened due to the heat. We are doing the last Saturday in May and the first Sunday in June. We need people to operate the weed whackers, other people to use the loppers and hand saws to cut back the branches that the weed whackers can't get. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8:30 am. Contact Jim Hooper 717/252-3784 or if you have any questions.

May 31 Short Hike - Hike 5 miles in the Lake Williams/Redman area. Bring water, snacks, good walking/hiking shoes. Hike leaders: Helmut Wirschal and Eric Ling (815-6635.) Meet Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:00 PM.

Hike leaders remember to contact Phyllis Morley immediately after your hike to report number of club members and guests who were on the hike and the number of miles hiked. If the hike is cancelled, still let her know. Email or phone 764-6822 or snail mail a copy of the sign-in sheet to 2640 Wexford Lane, York, PA 17404 -anyway will do!!!

Thursday Work Trips: Come join the group that does trail work, usually on the MDT. Call Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 for time and place.

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
