August 3 Short Hike - In conjunction of the celebration of Shank’s Mare’s 30th Anniversary, this will be a hike on the Mason Dixon Trail leaving from Shank’s Mare and going south on the trail. The plan is to hike about 6 miles total, depending on the group. It will be a simple out and back, but taking in the some river hills and views. Be sure to bring water and foot ware suitable for going over rocks. We will meet at the parking lot at the Galleria Mall,  Boscov's East Parking at 1:00 PM to carpool. Or, if you prefer, just meet the group at Shank’s Mare at 1:30. Car Pool fee: $2. Contact Bernie Frick at 843-6675 or with questions.

Shanks Mare invites you to attend other activities over the weekend such as a "porch show" and "outdoor stations". York Hiking Club and Mason Dixon Trails will be among the exhibits open Saturday, August 2nd, from 10 to 4 and Sunday, August 3rd from 12-4. If you can be on hand to represent the club during these times, contact Gwen Loose at 717-891-9967 or

Long Hike - Once around Pinchot Park on the Lakeview Trail. Approx. 9 miles with options for 2-3 miles more and/or a dip in the lake. Meet Adams Electric at 8:30 AM. Bring hiking boots, lunch, water, etc. Carpool fee: $3. Ice cold watermelon on my Dover area back porch afterward. Hike leader: Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967 .

August 8 Trails Committee Meeting 7:15 PM - Meet at the Hooper's farm to plan next year trail work. All club members are invited. Contact Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 for directions. 

August 10 Medium Hike - Be bold...be brave...or just BE! Join us for an 8-9 mile mystery hike!!! We will leave from Adams Electric at 8:30 AM and head west. Bring boots, lunch and water. Car pool fee $6.00. For more info (maybe) contact hike leaders - Tom and Phyllis Morley (717) 764-6822.


August 16 (Saturday) JPJ Work Day - Come out and help with cleaning, fixing, and improving JPJ cabin and grounds. Plenty of outside and inside work for all. Contact: Sarah Tateosian (inside jobs) (717) 741-2652 or Duane Hyson (outside work) (717) 993-6026. Meet at JPJ Cabin at 9 AM or call Sarah for carpooling. Bring lunch & water; dress for weather & work.

August 17 Short Hike - Lake Williams 5 miles. Unlike mad dogs and Englishmen this hike will begin at 8:30 AM. Meet at the Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) parking lot, bring plenty of water!!! Hike leader: Al Britton at (717) 741-0624. Carpool fee: $1


Medium to Long Hike - Caledonia State Park, Quarry Gap circuit hike. This is a moderate 7.1 miles using part of the AT and part park trails, total elevation gain 1200 ft-400 ft in 0.5 miles. Hike along a stream surrounded by rhododendron thickets and hemlocks in Dark Hollow. Always an option to add a few miles/trails while at Caledonia at end of hike. Meet Adams Electric 8:30 AM. Bring boots, water, lunch, snacks. Leader: Gwen Loose (717) 891-9967 or co-leader: Kim Jones (717) 637-7103. Car fee: $5.


August 23 KTA Mega- Hike- Cancelled


August 24 Medium Hike - Meet at 1:30 PM Boscov's East Parking area (East lot of the Galleria Mall near the ‘Road House’) or at the hike start for a 4-5 mile, "out and back" hike on the Mason Dixon Trail from Wrightsville to Highpoint Scenic Area. Through Murphey’s Hollow with some grades and one short stream walk. An ice cream stop is planned. Bring boots, snacks, plenty of water - water shoes if you like. Car pool fee: $1. Leader: Skip Newcomer at (717) 285-0146.

LOOKING TO SEPTEMBER: 
Sept 1 - Labor Day Picnic & Hike at JPJ Cabin. Cooks, hike leader needed. Hike leaders also needed for Sept 7 & 21: Short and long hikes and Sept 28 Medium hike. Contact Sept Activities Chairperson Joyce Hooper at (717) 252-3784 before August 15 to help.

At Shanks Mare Outfitters in Wrightsville. Covered-dish at 6:30 PM. Meeting promptly at 7 PM. Call Tim Schmidt (717) 235-5940 for carpooling from Boscov's East Parking lot at 6 PM.

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
