August 2 Long Hike: Enjoy this woodland hike of approximately 12 miles in Michaux State Forest beginning on the northern edge of Caledonia State Park at Quarry Gap Road. Loop hike partially following state forest trails, going around the Chambersburg Reservoir, and then returning by the A.T. Bring hiking boots, lunch, water, rain gear, etc. Meet at Woodberry Road parking at 8:00AM. Hike leader: Gwen Loose, (717) 891-9967. Carpool Fee: $5.00.

August 8 Saturday JPJ Work Day: Come on out and help get JPJ Cabin ready for the fall season. Jobs available for everyone inside and out. There is big work and little work. Anyone like to paint? Wear old clothes and bring lunch. Meet at JPJ at 9:30 AM. Hot coffee and iced tea will be served with Sarah’s Famous Baked Something. It’s a fun day and we get stuff done. August 9 Medium Hike: Eight-mile hike around Lake Redman. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology). Bring snacks and water. For more information call or write Jack Goodwin at 717-819-9270 or

August 16 Long Hike: Come join us for a 10 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. We will start at route 225 (North of Duncannon) and hike to route 325 Clarks Valley. Bring lunch, water, snacks and sturdy footwear. We will leave the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8 a.m. Carpool fee is $5.00. August 23 Short Hike: About a 6-mile hike on the northern extension of the Rail Trail. We will start at John Rudy Park and hike south along the rail trail. Based on the weather we can shorten or extend the hike. Meet at the Boscov's East Parking (across from the Texas Roadhouse) at 12:00 p.m. (noon). Hike leaders Bob and Julie Falsetti, 717-854-3437 or

August 30 Long Hike: Approximately 12 miles along the Billy Goat Trail, C&O Canal, and Great Falls at Potomac, MD. This will be a figure-eight loop hike. The trails range from easy and flat to strenuous with some rock scrambling, so something for everyone. There are lots of amazing views of the Potomac River. There is also an option for those not wishing to do the rock scramble to return via the canal towpath. Bring boots, lunch, sunscreen, and plenty of water. We will leave the South End parking area Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 8:00 a.m. Carpool fee $5.00. Hike Leader: David Lukes, 717-818-4751 or




We have the Shank’s Mare Annual Art & Outdoor Fest on August 1. We need volunteers to man the joint MDTS - YHC table for two hour segments. Please contact Jim Hooper or Allen Britton if you can help. Call ASAP!

Saturday, August 29: The next board meeting of the Mason-Dixon Trail System will be held on the afternoon of August 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Conowingo Dam Visitor Center. The work hike will leave from the Visitors Center at 9:00 am. Please contact Jim Hooper, 252-3784 or if you have any questions or want to carpool.


Backpacking Trips 2015. Anyone interested in backpacking in 2015 should let either Tom Morley, or Jim McCoy know. We plan trips every now and then and we would like to know of any members who might be interested. Women are encouraged to sign up, current female members backpacking are: Kim Herbst, Gwen Loose, Regina Markle, Elyshia Menkin, and Barb Culton. Any of these people can let you know how much fun we have.

If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike please contact the monthly chair person, a short hike is recommended.

Reminder to hike leaders - please submit your sign-up sheets to Phyllis Morley in a timely manner so that our guests get credit for their miles.

FEELING LEFT OUT???: Please don’t be bashful feel free to step forward anytime to lead a hike. Please don’t wait to be asked. Call the monthly chairperson or me Al Britton 717-741-0624 or . I will put you in touch with the right person. Not sure you know what to do or you would like some one to go over the hike with you, well call me, I’ll be glad to help. No experience is necessary, just a desire to get involved. The hike can be of any length.

WANTED: Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays There is no need to wait for the weekend to get outside. Our Wednesday hikes were intended to bring out some of the old timers, which is still my goal; however, if you are willing to lead a hike of five to seven miles then do so as it is good to get outdoors midweek. Also, people willing to be hike leaders. If you know a hike, but are reluctant to step forward, please be assured that I will be glad to show you what is necessary to become a hike leader. No experience is necessary, just a desire to get involved. The hike can be of any length. I would be glad to go with you to scout out the hike. Give me a call or e mail me 717-741-0624 or

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County 
Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates only from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years very little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. We do not need any more copies of the annual log books.

Card Committee: Linda Bean has graciously agreed to be our “card committee” since Sally Zimmerer has moved from the area. If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at .net or 764-1091 and she will send them a card.

Please volunteer to lead a hike or two for this year's schedule.

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
