WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN August - SHORT HIKE (4-6 MILES): Weekly Wednesday workout hike at York County Parks’ Lake Williams. Pace will be brisk (about 2.5-3.0 mph) and mileage will increase as we gain more daylight. We will not hike past dusk. Bring snack, water and hiking shoes/boots. Hike is on, rain or shine. (Note: June 5 hike will be led by Donna Hess at a moderate pace.)

Meeting Location: Lake Williams Parking, South George Street         Departure Time: 6:00 PM

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 – SHORT OR MEDIUM HIKE (4-8 MILES): We'll start at Long Level and rock scramble up the 'Dragon Spine' then down to Greenbranch Run on the Mason-Dixon Trail. Hikers can cool off in the stream there or dip feet in river and rest. Those who want to explore more can continue on to Cuff Run to enjoy the beauty and waterfalls there or we can return. We will view the Susquehanna River, possibly seeing eagles, hawks, etc. from lookouts. This section has a big climb at beginning then gentle rolling hills. Great hike for teens who love to climb and explore. Bring plenty of water, snacks, bug spray and sturdy hiking boots.

FRIDAY EVENING, AUGUST 9 - SHORT SUNSET HIKE (3 MILES) – Starting at 6 PM we will hike across Perrydell Farm and talk to the cows…or we could sing to the cows. Bring some money to buy an ice cream cone or chocolate milk if you like at the Dairy. Then we will hike back over the farm and enjoy the sunset colors.

Meeting Location: Bridgeway Church, 255 Reynolds Mill Road, back area of the parking lot    Departure Time: 6:00 PM

SUNDAY, AUGUST 11 - SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): This loop hike will follow the current Mason-Dixon Trail through Hellam Hills Nature Preserve, along with some of the future route and some of the past. Two small stream crossings. Wear hiking boots/shoes. Bring water & lunch or snacks. The hike will be followed at 1 pm by the M-DTS quarterly meeting which you are welcome to attend.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 – WORK DAY AT THE CABIN: Come on out and help get our JPJ cabin ready for the fall season. Jobs available for everyone inside and out. You can pick little work or big work. There is a big jug of white paint just waiting to be spread. Something needs to be painted yellow… or green. Wear old clothes and bring lunch. Meet at JPJ at 9:30 a.m. Hot coffee and iced tea will be served with Sarah’s Famous Baked Chocolate Whatyoumaccallit! It’s a fun day and we get stuff done. SUNDAY AUGUST 18 - LONG HIKE (20 MILES WITH SHORTER OPTIONS): Spend a summer day on the 2019 PA Trail of the Year, the Mid State Trail. On this section, we’ll begin near State College, and end at Penn Roosevelt State Park. This trail will have some climbs, some rocks, and some views. We’ll also drop in on the Bear Meadows Natural Area and cross the junction with the Standing Stone Trail. Bring hiking boots/shoes, water, snacks, and lunch (and a head lamp, just in case). If you want to do a shorter hike, please contact the hike leader in advance and plan to drive your own vehicle.

SUNDAY AUGUST 25- MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): This is a pleasant hike starting from the parking lot of the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville out to the Accomac Inn and back. Most of the hike is in the shade following a level, open trail along the Susquehanna River. Wear hiking boots/shoes. Bring water and snacks.

KTA Volunteers: Volunteers needed for the KTA Trail Challenge for the YHC station at Otter Creek Campground on September 7, 2019. Register on the KTA website https://www.kta-hike.org/tc-registration.html and in the field if associated with an organization, enter YHC. Email Alan Noble with your availability.

 

Sawyer Training: If anyone is interested in becoming a certified sawyer (male or female) for the AT please let Tom Morley know ( ). The next training session is October 26 and 27. This is a two day class to become certified to operate a chainsaw on the AT. There is no charge, but you should be willing to do sawyer work on request. Contact Tom with any questions, class fills up fast. Our club can probably get at least one, maybe two into the class. 

 

Hike Leaders Wanted: We are so thankful for all of our hike leaders and were fortunate to add several new hike leaders this year. We are always in need of additional new hike leaders, so please consider leading a hike or two in 2019. Please contact David Lukes at if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. Training will be provided.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
