Welcome to the York Hiking Club Newsletter, a complete monthly listing of hikes, work trips, special events and announcements.  

 

All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

JULY 4 - 6, JPJ PICNIC - Come spend a relaxing day at the JPJ Cabin. Hike on your own or with a group, or just sit on the porch and relax. There will be a covered dish meal at 1:30 pm on July 4. Call Sarah (741-2652) with how many will be there and what you are bringing for the meal. If one day isn’t enough stay all weekend or as long as you want there will be people there both nights, but you are on your on for food. If you are planning to stay over, or for more information contact: Duane Hyson (717) 993-6026.

JULY 6 - Long Hike - Come down to JPJ for a long hike, (or just roll out of bed if you stay over night). We will leave the cabin at 9:00 am . We will hike about ten miles on the Mason - Dixon trail and back roads in the area. Bring hiking boots, lunch, and plenty of water. No car pool fee. JULY 6 - Short Hike: Let’s keep this hike local and save on the gas. Let’s hike in the great York county Parks. We will hike about five miles in and round Lake Redman and Lake Williams area. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) parking lot at 12:30 or you may meet in the parking lot between Lake Redman and Lake Williams on the Susquehanna trail going north to Jacobus. The parking lot is on the right. Car pool fee: $1.50. Hike Leader: Douglas W Brahmer (717) 741-3357.

JULY 13 Short/Medium - No hike leader 

JULY 20 - Short Hike: We will hike approximately 5 miles on a section of the Appalachian and Sunset trail in the Michaux State Forrest. There will be two moderate climbs. Meet at Adams Electric at 1:00. Carpool fee $5.00. Hike Leader: Jim Bare (717) 225-3939

JULY 20 - Long Hike - It's across the river to Lancaster Co. for about 9 miles along the Susquehanna. The hike will begin at Tucquin Glen and end at PPL's Arboretum Education center. We'll see a pretty shaded stream (Tucquin Creek), some nice views of the river, and maybe even an eagle. Bring boots, lunch, and plenty of water. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 8:30. Car pool fee: $3. Leader: Jim Howell (another rookie leader), phone (717) 244-8271. 

JULY 27 - Short/Medium Hike: No hike leader 

JULY. 28 - Board Meeting 7:00 pm at Sarah Tateosioan’s house.


Announcements:

INVITED: Thursday Work Trips Join the group that does trail work on Thursdays. Contact Jim Hooper (717)252-3784 or to get on the email list announcing each week’s work trip.

Hike leaders are needed for the following dates in August: 3 (short) & (long), 10 (medium) & 17 (short) & (long) & 24 (medium). Creek walks and tubing are also acceptable. Please contact Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967 by July 7. 

The following person has fulfilled the requirements for membership and will be invited to join the club if there are no objections within ten days*:

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

Reminder, anyone wishing to receive their newsletter by e-mail instead of by postal mail (we have saved postage costs keeping dues down), please forward your e-mail address to Bernie Frick to sign up.

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
