June 6 (Saturday) - Medium hike along the scenic Gunpowder River in MD. 7-mile, "lollypop" hike, several ups and downs, some rock scrambling. Bring good boots, water and lunch. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 9:30 AM. Hike leader: Kim Jones at . Carpool: $3.

July 4 (Saturday) - Picnic at JPJ Cabin. Guess who’s cookin’? Sarah T. and she invites, "Y’all to come!" Lunch will be at 1:30 PM. Work up an appetite with a hike at 10 AM to Indian Steps Museum and other nearby sites. RSVP for the meal by Thursday evening 9 PM. Cost for meal: approx. $4. Reservations once made must be paid. Last minute plans to come are fine, just bring a dish to share. Questions or to arrange a carpool call Sarah at (717) 741- 2652.

July 5 - Long hike - About 9 miles along the Gunpowder River just north of Pretty Boy Reservoir in Baltimore County, mostly on fire roads. A few moderate climbs (400'). Hike includes ruins of old paper mills, old
cemeteries and the gorgeous Hemlock Gorge. Two stream crossings and a short detour through the river to avoid the swamp (Sandals or other shoes for walking through water would be helpful). Bring boots, lunch,
& plenty of water. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 8:30 AM. Car Pool Fee: $3. Leader: Tim Schmidt at (717) 235-5940.

July 12- Short/ medium hike - 5-6 mile circle hike in the Accomac area. Hiking along the Susquehanna River on paved and dirt roads. One long hill. Bring good boots, water and snacks. Meet at 1 PM at the Galleria Mall, Boscov's East Parking near Texas Roadhouse. Car Pool Fee: $1. Leader: Joan Fitzpatrick at (717) 252-3257. 

July 19 - Short hike - Easy 3 mile hike in Seven Valleys/Hanover Junction area. Part rail trail, part secondary road, no hills. Possible stop at Hanover Junction Railroad Station and/or Serenity Station. Hike will begin and end at Seven Valleys parking lot of Heritage Rail Trail. Meet at 1:30 PM at Adams Electric parking lot. Hike Leader Sally Zimmerer (235-3158). Carpool: 50 cents.


Long hike - Lost Pond Bog Hike. 7.5 mi.: 6 mi. on Long Trail/A.T. & 1.5 mi. bushwhack (rough footing). 1200' elevation gain. Remote high pond, floating bog mat, pitcher plants & other bog vegetation. A special spot; led by a knowledgeable wilderness explorer. Well worth the drive to Vermont for the 2009 ATC Conference! For details: http://www.vermont2009.org. See you there!

July 26- Medium hike - This scenic 5-mile hike starts at Wrightsville boat launch and ends at Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. We will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow, Grace Plateau, and on to High Point, where you have a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding hills. Julie will be preparing snacks to eat at the winery after we finish the hike. Please bring water, snacks and wear good walking shoes/boots. Car pool fee $1.50. Meet at Boscov's East Parking (near Texas Road House) off PA 24 at 12:30 pm. Hike leaders: Bob and Julie Falsetti (717) 854-3437.

July 28 - (Tuesday) Board Meeting. 7 PM at Gwen Loose’s house. Call (717) 891-9967 for directions.

Message from JPJ House Committee: We are in need of bunk bed/cot mattresses in good condition for the JPJ Cabin. Call Sarah (717) 741-2652.

KTA Susquehanna Super Hike: September 12, 26 miles on trails along the Susquehanna River beginning at JPJ cabin. For information on the hike: www.kta-hike.org. Since the hike begins at our club cabin, we need volunteers to help at JPJ and along the hike route. Contact: Club president Tim Schmidt at (717) 235-5940 or .

Hike leaders remember to contact Phyllis Morley immediately after your hike to report number of club members and guests who were on the hike and the number of miles hiked. If the hike is cancelled, still let her know. Email or phone 764-6822 or snail mail a copy of the sign-in sheet to 2640 Wexford Lane, York, PA 17404 -anyway will do! Hike logs go to Jim Trautman, email and address at top of newsletter.

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
