June 4 National Trials Day The Mason-Dixon Trail System will celebrate the opening of the rebuilt Sawmill Run bridge, Meet at the York Hiking Club cabin at 9:30 am to walk thru the Otter Creek Camp Ground over to the bridge. After the reopening of the bridge, the group will do a short hike and then go back to the cabin for refreshments and a meeting. Contact Jim Hooper 717/272-3784 or if you have questions. 

June 5 AT Work Hike The first of two work hikes to clear the brush on our Peters Mtn section of the AT. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store meeting place at 8:30 am. Bring work gloves, boots, water and lunch. Contact Jim Hooper 717/272-3784 or if you have questions.

June 8 Short Hike (Wednesday) Lake Williams: This will be a short hike of no more than five miles. If you feel up to it please join us at 10:00 AM at the parking at Lake Williams on George St. rain cancels. Hike Leader: Allen Britton 741-0624, .

June 11 AT Work Hike The second work hike to clear the brush on our Peters Mtn section of the AT. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8:30 am. Bring work gloves, boots, water and lunch. Contact Jim Hooper 717/272-3784 or if you have questions.

June 12 Short Hike: Come enjoy a summer afternoon walk along the historic Heritage Rail Trail, section 3 to Section 1, 5 mile hike. Difficulty: Easy, relatively flat, crushed gravel with some paved sections. Hike starts at the Glen Rock parking lot, passes through Railroad, and ends at New Freedom Train Station, which should be open to the public for the summer season. Admission is free. There may be an opportunity purchase refreshments. Bring water, snacks, and either walking shoes or hiking boots. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:00PM. June 12 Bike Ride on NCR Rail Trail in MD Choose your own length. Meet at Adams Electric at 8:30 AM with your bicycle, helmet, lunch, lots of water, watch and/or cell phone. Based on how many bike racks we have, we’ll carpool to Parkton, MD where riders can travel north into PA and/or further south into MD. Trail maps will be provided at the start, and riders will determine meeting times, places, and distances to travel. We’ll return to York approx. 2:30 PM. Carpool Fee: $4. June 15 (Wednesday) Full Moon Hike NO HIKE LEADER

 

June 19 Short Family Hike: Bring the family out for a 3-4 mile nature scavenger hike at Rocky Ridge State Park. This will be a leisurely hike as we look for Mother Nature’s treasures. Ice cream will be served after the hike. Meet at the first parking lot on the left at Rocky Ridge at 1:30. Hike leaders: Kim Herbst (717) 887-4462 or and Skip Newcomer (717) 891-5206. Call either hike leader if you wish to meet at Boscov's East Parking meeting place.

 

June 26 Short Hike: Section 3 to Section 4 of the Heritage Rail Trail, 4-mile hike. The hike starts at the Glen Rock Parking lot and ends at the Hanover Junction Train Station, which should be open to the public for the summer season. Admission is free. Slight uphill grade from Glen Rock to the Train Station. . Meeti at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:30PM. Car Pool Fee: $2.50. June 26 Long Hike: Approx. 11-12 miles in Michaux State Forest beginning on the northern edge of Caledonia State Park at Quarry Gap Road. Loop hike partially following state forest trails, going around the Chambersburg Reservoir, and then returning by the A.T. Bring hiking boots, lunch, plenty of water, rain gear, bug spray, etc. Meet Adams Electric at 8:30 AM. Carpool Fee: $4. Leader: Sherry Snyder 717-495-1183 or .

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

June 17: 1st Annual A.T. Hall of Fame Banquet at Allenberry Inn, Boiling Springs. Information and tickets at www.atmuseum.org or by contacting Gwen Loose at (717) 891-9967. Cash bar, dinner, awards, silent auction, entertainment, and more.

 

June 18-19: 1st Annual A.T. Festival at A.T. Museum in Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Speakers, demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, entertainment, food and more. Also special programs each Sunday at 1 PM throughout the summer. Information at www.atmuseum.org.

 

July 3 Picnic at JPJ Cabin is coming up. Alan Noble, July Activities Chairperson, is looking for a picnic/covered-dish coordinator and a hike leader. Contact Alan at 717-817-9430 or to help with this event. House use fee for members is $1.00 and non-members $2.00. Plan to bring family and friends to celebrate the nation’s Independence Holiday while enjoying the great outdoors. RSVPs will be due to Alan on or around June 29.

 

July Hike Leaders Needed: July 3 (Picnic), July 10 Long Hike Leader, July 24 short and long hike Leaders, and July 31 Short Hike Leader. Contact Alan Noble as listed above by June 1 to help.

 

Wanted: Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays (three miles or less, you can if you choose to extend the hike. The time and place is also up to you. Our intent is to provide hikes for our more mature members who can no longer do the miles or for those of you who would like to hike during the week.

 

Also, individuals who would be willing to lead canoe and bicycle trips during the summer months. Please contact Al Britton 717-741-0624 or .

KTA Susquehanna Super Hike September 10: 26 miles on trails along the Susquehanna River. We need volunteers to help at JPJ and along the hike route. Contact: Club president Tom Morley at (717) 764-6822 or


Please volunteer to lead a hike or two for this year's schedule.

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
