March 1 (Saturday): SHORT HIKE & PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Come out and celebrate the emergence of spring at Oregon Ridge County Park, MD! Start by chowing down on pancakes smothered in pure maple syrup and then hike 4-5 miles on the trails at O.R. searching for early signs of spring (skunk cabbage, spring peepers, etc.).We will start/end the hike at the nature center, so include some time to tour the facilities. Expect several stream crossings, muddy trails and a few short, steep hills. Bring water, snacks, boots, $5 for pancake breakfast and $2.50 for carpool fee. Meet at Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) 10 AM. Hike leader: Kim Jones (717) 637-7103 or Co-leader: Gwen Loose (717) 891-9967.

LONG HIKE: Hike about 9 miles in the Elk Neck State Forest with the Mason-Dixon Trail Club led by Yvonne Blades. The hike is mostly flat through the woods of Elk Neck State Forest on the M-DTS crossing the Diggs Farm Tract and the Main Tract through the densely forested Plum Creek Watershed. Dress for the weather and bring boots, lunch and water. We leave Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) promptly at 7:15 AM Car pool fee $3.00. March 7 (Friday) COVERED DISH & SLIDES 6:30 PM atYork Township Recreation Building: Join us as we all get a "mountain high" from an inspiring slide presentation by Hellam resident and AMC member Mike Gabin based upon his 7 years of hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Bring a favorite dish to share. The usual disposable plates and utensils will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own place settings. See you there!

Our place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

   From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.

March 9 MEDIUM HIKE (MDTS HIKE SERIES) Daylight Savings Time Begins. 8.2-mile hike will begin on Bull Road, an historic road dating back to Revolutionary times, and will follow roads to the end point of I-83. Meet at Boscov's East Parking, near Texas Roadhouse, off Mt. Zion Rd. RT 24. Meeting time 8:30 AM. Carpool fee $2.50. Wear good hiking/walking boots. Bring lunch and water. March 16 SHORT HIKE: No hike leader.

LONG HIKE: Join us for a joint hike with the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club. Approx. 10 miles in gameland #211 (Sharp Mt.). An easy loop hike in a very beautiful area, much of it on level terrain on the Old Stagecoach Trail & an old railroad grade. We will visit Rausch Gap Shelter, see old railroad trestle ruins on the Upper Rail Trail, & hike along Gold Mine Run. Climbing is minimal. Time permitting we may visit Boxcar Rocks (Chinese Wall). Bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. We will leave the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store promptly at 8 AM Carpool fee $6. Leader Jim McCoy, 717-852-7570 or .

March 22 JPJ WORK DAY: Come out and help get JPJ Cabin ready for the season. Jobs available for everyone inside and out. Wear old clothes and bring lunch. Meet at JPJ at 9:00 AM. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate will be served with homemade cookies! If anyone wants to carpool please call Sarah. March 23 (EASTER) NO HIKE.

March 30 AT WORK HIKE Primary goal, weather permitting, is to continue the boundary painting, also chain saw work and shelter maintenance. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store, at 8:30 AM. Bring work gloves, boots, lunch, water and a day pack. No hike fee. Contact Jim Hooper 252-3784 if you have any questions.

Due to building renovations, our Annual Meeting will not be held at the York Twp. building. Suggestions for a meeting place can be forwarded to Tim Schmidt, club president, at or (717) 235-5940.


Volunteer Needed:
To organize the York Hiking Club support for the KTA Mega-hike scheduled for September 6. If interested, contact Tim Schmidt as listed above for more details.


Trail Maintenance:
Every Thursday a group meets to do trail work. Contact Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 for location/time/details. 

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:
KTA will hold an Endangered Hiking Trail Seminar May 17, 2008 at the KTA office in Harrisburg to provide volunteers with training, knowledge and support that will enable them to work with landowners to obtain more permanent access to hiking trails crossing their properties. The Mason-Dixon Trail System is trying to get the trail off the roads and needs help from citizens in the following townships: Hellam, East Manchester, Connewago, Warrington and Franklin. Contact Jim Hooper (717) 252-3784 if interested.


***Notice to hike leaders*** Please be prompt getting names of hikers and guests to the membership chairperson, Phyllis Morley, , so they can get credit for their miles hiked. E-mails are fine, but both members and nonmembers must be included.

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!
