A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

APRIL 30- MAY 2: Hooper Weekend If you act now by contacting Jim Hooper, 717-252-3784 or for information on the weekend, you may be able to enjoy staying in a nearby motel and hiking Saturday and Sunday on the Thunderswamp Trail in the Poconos.

 

MAY 2 Short hike: 5 Mile Rocky Ridge Circuit Hike with varied terrain. Hike will traverse across both lookout points. Some sections are steep. Bring hiking boots, lunch/snacks and water. Meet 10:00 AM at East Parking lot (Boscov's East lot). No fee. Parking Hike Leader: Alan Noble, 717-817-9430 or .

 

MAY 9 (Mother’s Day) Hike: This scenic 5 mile hike starts at Wrightsville boat launch and ends at Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. We will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow, Grace Plateau, and on to High Point, where you have a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding hills. Julie will be preparing snacks to eat at the winery after we finish the hike. Please bring water, snacks and wear good walking shoes/boots. Car pool fee $1.50. Meet at Boscov's East Parking lot (near Texas Road House) off PA 24 at 12:30 pm. Hike leaders: Bob and Julie Falsetti (717) 854-3437.

 

MAY 15-16 Joint Hikes with Batona Hiking Club: CANCELED!!! We welcome Batona Hiking Club to our JPJ cabin the weekend of May 15-16. To make reservations to stay at JPJ cabin or for more information about the weekend, contact Al at or 717-741-0624 by May 12th. Cost to stay at JPJ is $4 for York Hiking Club members, $6 for guests.

 

MAY 15 Saturday hike: The MDT Route 624 to Apollo County Park 9.1 miles. Meet at Boscov's East Parking lot at 9:00 AM. We will meet Batona members at the boat ramp on route 624 and hike in familiar territory to Shank’s Mare and perhaps stop for ice cream and continue to the park. Fee: $3.

 

MAY 15 Sunday hike: The hike will be 7 miles. Kelly’s Run to the Pinnacle Natural Area. This is a loop hike. A challenging and one of the most beautiful hikes we can show our guests. Met at JPJ cabin, hike starts at 9:30 AM. No car pool fee.

 

MAY 16 Short hike: 5 miles on the Turkey Hill Trail along the eastern banks of the Susquehanna River. Plan for an out and back trip. This can be modified to a shorter one way trip depending on the conditions of the day and the group input. There is a 3/4 mile upgrade to reach the ridge and a few ravines (ups and downs) along the way. With that said, the hike will be at a relaxed pace. Bring hiking boots, snacks, water and an extra layer. Meet at 1:30 PM in the Boscov's East Parking lot, at the Galleria Mall, near the Road House Restaurant. Hike fee: $1.50. MAY 23 Short hike: No hike leader.

 

MAY 23 Long hike: Approx. 10 miles in Michaux State Forest on the A.T. from Sheet Iron Roof Rd. to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. A long gradual climb of 800 ft about 1/3rd of the way into the hike & a long gradual descent of about 700 ft to finish. We’ll take the side trail to Pole Steeple to check out the views. Bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. We will leave the west side meeting place (Adams Electric) at 8 AM Fee: $5. Hike leader: Jim McCoy, 717-852-7570 or

 

MAY 27 (Thursday): Full Moon Bike-Hike : Meet at Adams Electric at 5:30 PM with your bike. We will bike from Serenity Station Café in Seven Valleys at 6 PM and travel south on the Heritage Rail Trail, each rider choosing their own pace and distance. Return to the café around 8 PM for refreshments (ice cream, BYOB, or whatever) and depart at 8:30 PM for a hike north toward Howard Tunnel, at a casual pace for approx. 1 hour of total walking. Join us for both or either activity. No fee. Bring flashlight, comfortable shoes and water. Leader: Gwen Loose at 717-891-9967 or .

 

MAY 30-31 Memorial Day Week-end at JPJ Cabin: Join us Sunday and Monday for the holiday celebration and/or hike and meal on Monday. Guess who’s cookin’? Sarah T. and she invites, "Y’all to come!" Lunch will be at 1:30 PM. Work up an appetite with a hike at 10 AM to Indian Steps Museum and other nearby sites. RSVP for the meal by Thursday evening 9 PM. Cost no more than $5 including house fee. $6 non-members. Reservations once made must be paid. Last minute plans to come are fine- just bring a dish to share. Thursday Work Trips: Come join the group that does trail work, usually on the MDT. Call Jim Hooper at (717) 252-3784 or for time and place.

 

Lyme disease: Please let your members know that tick season is right around the corner. We know very little about the chronic phase or the lingering effects of Lyme disease. Funds are being raised to pay for continued research on this rapidly spreading disease. The fundraising event is being held May 6, 2010. You may find more details at www.springforlyme.org and in the attached PDF files Info and FAQ's.

 

A.T. Museum Grand Opening: Ceremony at 11 am on June 5, 2010 at Pine Grove Furnace, with hikes, work trips, lectures, entertainment, and a pig roast scheduled throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Information at www.atmuseum.org

KTA Susquehanna Super Hike September 11: 26 miles on trails along the Susquehanna River. We need volunteers to help at JPJ and along the hike route. Contact: Club president contact Tom Morley at (717) 764-6822 or for more information.

 

Our club has a CARD COMMITTEE: If you know someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc, you may notify Sally Zimmerer at (717) 235-3158 and she will send them a card.

 

Reminder, anyone wishing to receive their newsletter by e-mail instead of by postal mail (we have saved postage costs keeping dues down), please forward your e-mail address to Bernie Frick to sign up.

 

Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
