September 30 - October 2: KTA 2011 Fall Meeting & Hiking Weekend in Prospect, Butler County, Lutherlyn Camp. It is going to be an amazing weekend filled with a wide variety of hikes, kayaking/hike options and other activities, in a peaceful, beautiful setting. October 2 - Bike & Hike: We will meet at Glen Rock (behind the Glen Rock Mill Restaurant) on the York County Heritage Bike Trail at 1 p.m. Helmets are required for a club-sponsored ride. For bikers, we will ride north 10 miles from Glen Rock to Days Mill/Brillhart Station and back for a total of up to 20 miles. If you get tired, you can always turn around and shorten your ride. If you are not a biker, hikers will also meet at Glen Rock and walk south 3.25 miles to Railroad and back for a total of up to 6.5 miles. If you get tired, you can turn around and shorten your hike. A hiker will be asked to make sure all hikers get back to Glen Rock. Everyone should bring water and snacks. Bike/hike leader: Deborah Slawson, 717-235-2671, .

October 7 - 9 Away weekend: This is a continuation of last year’s hike. Hike two days on the northern extension of the Mid-State trail near the New York border and stay in a motel. Reservations are required. Please contact Jim Hooper 717/252-3784 or if interested as soon as possible.

October 9: Mostly flat 8.5-mile hike around Lake Pinchot on Lake Side Trail with a few mild elevations starting at Alpine Road Day Use Area. Meet at Adams Electric meeting place at 9 a.m. or call hike leader if you prefer to meet at Alpine Road Day Use Area. Bring hiking boots, plenty of water and lunch. Rain cancels hike, contact Regina Markle with any questions 717-428-3545. Car pool fee is $2.00.

October 16 - Moderate to long hike: 8.3 mile loop hike in Michaux State Forest starting at Pine Grove Furnace, going south to Tom’s Run Shelter, then returning on the Sunset Rocks Trail. About half the hike will be on the Appalachian Trail and will include a mountaintop view, a section of two handed rock scrambling, some short climbs and sections along mountain streams. Meet at the Adams Electric parking lot at 8:30 AM. Car  pool fee is $5. Bring lunch, suitable footwear and drinking water. Hike leader Bernie Frick can be reached at 717-843-6675 or .

October 19 - Short hike: A five (5) mile hike around Lake Williams. We will meet at the parking lot on South George Street (across from Lake Redman) at 1:00 PM. Hike Leader: Allen Britton 717-741-0624 or .

October 21: Annual meeting at the York Township Park Building. Items to be considered: 1) The election of officers for the following positions, President, Treasurer, one director at large, Trail Chairperson, and Activities chairperson. 2) Vote on revision of By Laws as described in the September newsletter, 3) any other issues brought forth by members. Time 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. As has been our tradition this will be a covered dish event. Please contact Al Briton at or 741-0624 and let him know what you are bringing.

Directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.


October 23 - Short hike: This scenic 5-mile hike starts at Wrightsville boat launch and ends at Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. We will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow, Grace Plateau, and on to High Point, where you have a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding hills. Julie will be preparing snacks to eat at the winery after we finish the hike. Please bring water, snacks and wear good walking shoes/boots. Car pool fee $1.50. Meet at Boscov's East Parking lot (near Texas Road House) off PA 24 at 12:30 pm. Hike leader: Julie Falsetti (717) 854-3437.

October 29 - M-DTS Hike and Meeting: Hike the M-DTS section in Maryland from Broad Creek to the Conowingo visitors’ center for 6.5 miles. Meet at the Conowingo visitors’ center parking lot at 9 a.m. for the hike and at 1:30 p.m. for the meeting. For people who want to carpool from York, please contact Jim Hooper or 252-3784 to make arrangements. 

October 30 - Short hike:  It’s time for another Halloween Hike in Tateoland! This is a laid back hike from our house over farmland, woods, and dell. Stretch yore legs for 5 mile or 2 mile if you choose, or yawl jest come late and set a spell on the porch and wait. Wait for the serving of the Soup de Journey and Horsedurrs, and the socialness of the happy-after-hike-hour in our humble abode. Meet in front parking lot of Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology) at 1:30 or 209 Reynolds Mill Road at 1:45. No car pool fee. Hike leaders Sarah and Lou Tateosian 741-2652.

October 30 - Long Hike: 9 +/-  1 mile in Nolde Forest near Reading. Take a chance on a Coin Hike. Odds are you'll like it. A few 400’ climbs. Bring hiking boots, water, lunch and a pencil or pen for marking your map. Meet at Boscov's East Parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Carpool fee is $5. Leader: Tim Schmidt, 717-235-5940

Announcements:


Logbook Information: Once again, it is time to compile the information for our annual logbook. Please check last year's information and see if you have any changes in your address, phone number or e-mail addresses. If you do, please contact me at either or by phone 717-764-6822. Please supply this information by the annual meeting or at the annual meeting. Thank you.

There will be a vote at the Annual Meeting to revise the By-Laws, Article I - Membership, to eliminate the 10-day waiting period after a prospective member has completed the 30-mile or equivalent service requirement for membership. Article VIII requires a two-week written notice and a two-thirds vote of members present to amend the By-Laws. For more information, contact Tim Schmidt, 717-235-5940.

The board meeting for the current quarter is scheduled for November due to the annual meeting being held in late October.

It is the best of times and the worst of times, and it is also time to think about our traditional Thanksgiving Day Dinner which will be held on November 20. Please volunteer to bring a dish for all of us to enjoy. Contact: Allen Britton, 717-741-0624 or e mail me at
