All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5: CODE ORANGE: Gifford Pinchot State Park with Friends of Pinchot State Park. This is an annual trail work trip at the park. Come out for a day of giving back to the trails that we use and enjoy so frequently. The Friends will provide a trail lunch for participants. Please let Steve know if you are coming a week ahead so they know the head count for lunch. Free camping and showers available Fri. & Sat for participants in Group Camping Areas D, E and F.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 – MEDIUM HIKE (8 MILES): Loop hike at Rocky Ridge County Park. The hike will start at the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area parking lot, then trail 7, 8, 3, 9, 2, 1, 4, and possibly 6. We will stop at both overlook platforms on trails 6 and 2. Trail has several hills, and some may be strenuous and rocky in some areas. Bring hiking boots or tail shoes, water, and snacks.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): This will be an urban hike in York City to view the various murals that can be found throughout the city. The hike will start at the corner of Philadelphia St. and Roosevelt Avenue.

Meeting Location: Corner of Philadelphia St. & Roosevelt Ave. Departure Time: 1:00 PM

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20 – MEDIUM HIKE (6-8 MILES): Swatara State Park –from Trout Run Trail head parking area, we'll hike to Appalachian trail to Rausch Gap taking an established detour on Middle Patch Trail AROUND the beaver dam this time! This area is part of St. Anthony's Wilderness and full of history from mining days. We'll see Old Gold Mine Cemetery, walk on Stony Valley Rail trail, see Rausch Gap shelter, beautiful creek with waterfalls, old railroad bridge, etc. If hikers wish to go a little further, we can see Cold Springs old mining town remains, then return. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring lots of water, lunch, snacks and bug spray if desired. This is the greatest month to hike (little cooler and not cold yet) so come out and enjoy this pre-fall hike BEFORE hunting starts!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26 – SHORT HIKE (3-4 MILES): This hike will begin and end at a magnificent view of the Susquehanna River between Marietta and Columbia. We’ll explore the trails in the Shenk Trail Head area at a beginner pace. There will be some mild inclines but nothing too hard. Bring good hiking shoes/boots, water, and snack.

Meeting Location: Breezyview Overlook off Rt. 441 Departure Time: 9:00 AM

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

Sawyer Training: If anyone is interested in becoming a certified sawyer (male or female) for the AT please let Tom Morley know ( ). The next training session is October 26 and 27. This is a two day class to become certified to operate a chainsaw on the AT. There is no charge, but you should be willing to do sawyer work on request. Contact Tom with any questions, class fills up fast. Our club can probably get at least one, maybe two into the class. 

 

Hike Leaders Wanted: We are so thankful for all of our hike leaders and were fortunate to add several new hike leaders this year. We are always in need of additional new hike leaders, so please consider leading a hike or two in 2019. Please contact David Lukes at if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. Training will be provided.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
