A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

SEPTEMBER 6-LONG HIKE: - 12.3 miles. Hike # 2 on the A.T. ‘Series Across Maryland’, from Gathland State Park to Rt 70. We will pass thru the Washington Monument State Park (featuring the first monument erected to George Washington). There will be a long gradual climb of about 850 feet over 4 miles to start the hike. Possible dinner stop at the Mountaingate buffet. Please bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. We will leave Adams Electric at 8:00 a.m. Car pool fee $6. Leader Jim McCoy at 717-852-7570 or

SEPTEMBER 7-LABOR DAY PICNIC @JPJ: Come to our cool, shaded spot along the Susquehanna at JPJ cabin and enjoy a hike and covered dish luncheon. The day will be coordinated by the Seville’s, with Joan heading up the lunch and John the hike. Call Joan with your covered dish or how you can help her round out the meal. John said, "It will be a surprise hike". Hike at 10 AM and luncheon at 1 PM. $1 per person JPJ use fee. Phone: (717) 244-6769 

SEPTEMBER 12- KTA’S SUSQUEHANNA SUPER HIKE: This 25-mile, one-day event will take place on the Mason Dixon Trail and the Conestoga Trail beginning at our JPJ clubhouse. This is a big event for our area, and it is our hope we can get some participants and volunteers from our club. Go to www.kta-hike.org and click the appropriate links.

SEPTEMBER 13- SHORT /MEDIUM HIKE: CONOY CANAL TOWPATH TRAIL will be either a 3.2 or 6.4 hike. This is along the Susquehanna River starting at Falmouth and ending at Bainbridge. To make it 6.4 miles, it would be an out and back hike. Being a towpath it is easy walking. According to Audubon Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail Guide, more than 229 bird species have been recorded along this trail. Meet at 1:30 PM at Boscov's East Parking Area, Galleria Mall near Texas Roadhouse, off of Rt. 24 (MT. ZION RD.) Wear good walking shoes and bring water and a snack. Car pool fee $1. SEPTEMBER 20- SHORT HIKE: Hiking in the country over three rolling hills, on Barcroft road and a small development in Delroy. The hike will be about 3 miles, ending up at a one-room schoolhouse named Willis. We will tour the inside of the schoolhouse and a snack will be served. The meeting place is Boscov's East Parking Area, Galleria Mall, near Texas Roadhouse at 1 PM. Wear good walking shoes and bring water. Car pool fee: $1. Hike leader: Joan Overall (717) 755- 5240.

SEPTEMBER 20-MASON DIXON LONG HIKE AND MEETING: Hike includes a relocation of the Mason-Dixon Trail in Game Land 242 and will have two options, 9.6 miles or 6 miles. The shorter hike will go from Robinson Rd to Rt 177. The longer hike will continue into Pinchot Park. Meet at the north meeting place (Rutters) at 8 AM or at the boat launch on Rt 177 at 9 AM. The M-DTS meeting at 2 PM at where the Mason-Dixon Trail crosses thru the Conewago Day Use Area of the park. Bring water, lunch, boots. Car pool fee from York $2.50. SEPTEMBER 25-27 KTA WEEKEND: Annual Meeting and Hiking Weekend will be held at Marienville, Forest County, Pa. This is a great way to hike on PA Trails and meet fellow PA hikers. Read about it at www.kta.hike.org .

SEPTEMBER 27-MEDIUM HIKE: A surprise hike, approximately 6-miles in Airville, which will take you on and off trail, and to the Indian Maiden Water Falls. Meeting at Boscov's East Parking, Galleria Mall, near Texas Roadhouse at 10 AM. Bring water, lunch, and hiking shoes. Car pool fee: $2. Hike leader: Eddie Johnson at (717) 862-3741.

OCTOBER 4th: YORK HIKING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING & FUN EVENTS at the JPJ Cabin. There will be a hike at 10 AM and a Hot Dog Roast/Covered Dish Luncheon at 1:30 PM, with meeting starting with dessert. Al Britton will provide hot dogs. Call him to contribute to the luncheon at (717) 741-0624.

Reminder, anyone wishing to receive their newsletter by e-mail instead of by postal mail (we have saved postage costs keeping dues down), please forward your e-mail address to Bernie Frick to sign up.

 

Phyllis Morley would like to remind all hike leaders to forward the sign-up sheet to her so that all the new hikers will get the correct credit for the 30 miles for membership. If you are a guest and feel you have met your 30 miles, but have not been mentioned in the newsletter please contact Phyllis Morley at (717) 764-6822. 

 
Any hike leader who has maps (topo, hand drawn, or otherwise) of past hikes they have led are asked to send a copy to Tim Schmidt, president 

    Tim has volunteered to maintain a catalog of hikes to be shared with future hike leaders who are looking for suggestions of where to hike. Thanks!

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
