All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 03 - LABOR WEEKEND PICNIC: We will meet down at JPJ for an unusual celebration of the holiday. Bring a covered dish that reflects your ethnic heritage. We will meet at 10:00 for a hike whose length and location is to be determined. Fee for members $1.00 non- members $2.00. Hike Leader: Alan Noble, 717-758-8470 or . Please call hike leader if you are planning to attend as well as what you plan to bring for the covered dish.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 09 - VOLUNTEER FOR KTA TRAIL CHALLENGE: Come out to help with the York Hiking Club checkpoint/water station at Otter Creek Campground. Contact Alan Noble at 717-758-8470 or . See the KTA web site ( http://www.kta-hike.org ) for information pertaining to the trail challenge.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 - SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): Come out and enjoy a short hike on country roads around Wallace Cross Mill County Park. 

Meeting Location: York County High School of Technology (Vo-Tec) Meeting Time: 1:00 PM 
Carpool Fee: $1.00 Hike Leader: Duane Hyson (717) 993-6026.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 - SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): This scenic hike starts at the Wrightsville Boat Launch and ends at the Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. We will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow, Grace Plateau, and on to High Point, where you have a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding hills. Please bring water, snacks and wear good walking shoes/boots.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 - ANNUAL MEETING AND COVERED DISH: Items to be considered: The election of officers for the following positions: President and Director at Large. As has been our tradition this will be a covered dish event. Please contact Alan Noble at or 717-758-8470 and let him know what you are bringing. 

Meeting Location: York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows: From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile. At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St. Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right. Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.

Meeting Time: 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 - LONG HIKE (11 MILES): We’ll drop cars at the end point along PA 325, east of the DeHart Reservoir, and shuttle west to the Appalachian Trail parking lot. From there, we’ll hike up the AT for an 1100’ climb over the first three miles. We’ll then hike the ridge of Sharp Mountain to the Sand Springs Trail. Along the ridge, we’ll take a side trip to see an old stone tower and we’ll pass the remains of the village of Yellow Springs. We’ll take the Sand Springs Trail back down to the cars, with side excursions to see “The General” and sand springs. What is The General? Come hike and find out! Bring lunch, water, snack, good hiking shoes. The trail will have rocks.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 - SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): Come out and join us for a family friendly stroll through a very pretty area of York County at Lake Redman. We will meet in the parking lot on Sparton Road, just off Hess Farm Road. From there we will walk on the road for a short distance to connect with trail #5 and enjoy a walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. This hike is approximately 3 miles with a few short, mild climbs along the way.

Meet Location: Lake Redman parking lot off of the intersection of Sparton Road and Hess Farm Road

KTA Trail Challenge: Registration is now open for this KTA sponsored event. This is one of the best and closest trail running/hiking events in PA! We have two hikes this month covering most of the course if you want to preview it. The YHC also volunteers every year at one of the aid stations, so if you do not run it you can still participate as a volunteer. Hike Leaders Wanted: Thanks so much to all those who have signed up to lead hikes for 2017! There are a great many slots available throughout the year. Even if you are a new member, you can still lead a hike. We have short, medium, and long options available. Please see the schedule included with this month’s newsletter and contact the monthly chairperson to sign up for one or more hikes. Please volunteer to lead a hike or two for this 2017 year.

 

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. No more copies of the annual log books. 

Card Committee: Linda Bean serves as the “card committee.” If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at or 764-1091 and she will send them a card from the club.
