All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5 - SHORT HIKE (5-6 MILES): Hike in Spring Valley County Park. Just a few hills and maybe some muddy trails depending on the weather. Bring hiking shoes, snack and water. Please make arrangements directly with Kathy if you would like to meet at the park.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12 - LONG HIKE (10 MILES): A leisurely saunter through Michaux State Forest. John Muir said we should "saunter" through the woods to enjoy their beauty, not "hike" there. Specific trail as yet undetermined, but expect hill and dale and a possible creek crossing.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 - MEMBERS ONLY ANNUAL TURKEY DINNER AND HIKE at JPJ CABIN: Meal served at 1:30 PM, hot cider and cookies at 1 PM. Annual dues must be paid before the dinner (see below for details). You must sign up in advance for the meal. To help out with food contributions and to make your dinner reservation, contact Tom & Phyllis Morley (717-764-6822) or email . We will need THREE turkeys, three pots of mashed potatoes (approx.. 5 pounds each), three pots of sweet potatoes (approx. 3 pounds each), stuffing, cranberries, 2 to 3 kinds of vegetables, rolls, butter, desserts, cider and cookies. The hike leaves JPJ cabin promptly at 10 AM. Tom will take you up and down the hills to help you work up an appetite. 

Please call with your reservations and find out what you can bring. Of course, we always need folks to set up and clean up. RSVP by November 15. 

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26, SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): Road hike near Turkey Hill and River Road in Lancaster County. A few small hills. Only sneakers, water, and snacks needed.

Meeting Location: Boscov's East Parking lot near Texas Roadhouse Meeting Time: 12:30 PM

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26 - LONG HIKE (11.5 MILES): We will start at PA 850 and head north on the Appalachian Trail, climbing gradually about 700’ to the top of Cove Mountain. We’ll then hike along the ridge, with views from Hawk Rock and Eagle’s Edge. From there we’ll have a rugged hike down the mountain and through historic Duncannon. If there’s interest, we’ll stop at the Doyle Hotel for a snack or beverage. Then over the Clarks Ferry Bridge for a view of the Susquehanna (there’s a sidewalk for hikers). Bring lunch, water, snacks and sturdy footwear.

Hike Leaders Wanted: Thanks so much to all those who have signed up to lead hikes for 2017! There are a great many slots available throughout the year. Even if you are a new member, you can still lead a hike. We have short, medium, and long options available. Please see the schedule included with this month’s newsletter and contact the monthly chairperson to sign up for one or more hikes. Please volunteer to lead a hike or two for this 2017 year.

 

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. No more copies of the annual log books. 

Card Committee: Linda Bean serves as the “card committee.” If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at or 764-1091 and she will send them a card from the club. * "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
