SATURDAY-SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14-15, BACKPACKING TRIP (16 MILES): October is elk bugling season in Pennsylvania so we’re going to go try to see some elk and hear them call, way up in Elk State Forest, along the Elk Trail. Maybe we’ll see some and maybe we won’t but either way, we’ll have a nice fall weekend deep in the PA woods. Because of the shorter distances involved, this would make a fine first backpacking trip and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. We’ll start in the town of Benezette, PA and hike about ten miles to our campsite, finishing the final six on Sunday. When we finish Sunday, there will be another day hike (optional) on the Fred Woods Trail, which has some cool rock formations. Space will be limited and you must contact David Lukes to RSVP at 717-818-4751 or .

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 - LONG HIKE ON THE C&O CANAL AND BILLY GOAT TRAIL (10-12 MILES): We’ll travel 1.5 hours to the Great Falls Tavern parking area and hike the network of trails along the Potomac River. Some hills, some flats. We'll finish with the two mile cliff side rock scramble aptly called the Billy Goat Trail. The Billy Goat Trail is a challenging section, but can also be bypassed so don’t let that stop you. There is a fee to park unless you have a national parks pass so we'll take as few vehicles as possible. Bring lunch, water, snack, and good hiking shoes. There would also be an option to bring a bike and ride the C&O the whole time.

Meeting Location: Park & Ride lot off I83 at the Shrewsbury Exit 4, Rt 851 east, just past PENDOT facility (39.767940, -76.658568)

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. No more copies of the annual log books.

Card Committee: Linda Bean serves as the “card committee.” If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at or 764-1091 and she will send them a card from the club. New Email Address? Contact Bernie Frick ( ) or Phyllis Morley ( ). This information is held by the club only and will be used to send club information and for inclusion in our yearly logbook. Thank you for your cooperation.
