SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 – SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): Hike on the Rail Trail from New Freedom south across the Maryland Line about three miles, then turn around and return. Meet at the caboose at the New Freedom Train Station. Park where you can and walk over. Bring water, snack and comfortable shoes.

Meeting Location: New Freedom Train Station Parking Lot Departure Time: 10:00 AM

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11 – LONG HIKE (9 MILES): We’ll hike the Pinchot Park Lakeside Loop Trail. There might be some wet/muddy areas depending how rainy the weather will be the days prior to the hike. We’ll find a good spot to stop for break/lunch.

Meeting location: Conewago Day Use Area parking. (Gifford Pinchot State Park, Wellsville, PA) Departure Time: 9:00 AM

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17- LONG HIKE (10 MILES): Hike on the Rail Trail from Glen Rock to New Freedom. Although this is a 10 mile hike it is an easy hike. Completely flat surface, shaded most of the way and a great opportunity to take a deep breath and escape the recent madness. We have some great views of the beautiful Pennsylvania country side. The historic Railroad Station at New Freedom is our turn around point where we can enjoy a snack/lunch. Don't forget water and let us reconnect with fellow hikers and enjoy a wonderful fall day. Contact the hike leader for location/time if you wish to meet at the trailhead.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25 - MEDIUM HIKE (8.3 MILES): Loop hike in Michaux State Forest starting at Pine Grove Furnace, going south to Tom’s Run Shelter, then returning on the Sunset Rocks Trail. About half the hike will be on the Appalachian Trail and will include a mountaintop view, a section of two handed rock scrambling, some short climbs and sections along mountain streams. Meet at the small lot down behind the AT Museum. Bring lunch, suitable foot wear and drinking water.

Meeting Location: Pine Grove parking lot near the furnace and AT Museum Departure Time: 9:00 AM

COVID-19 York Hiking Club Guidelines

1. Stay home if you, or anyone in your family, are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.
2. Optional but recommend is carrying a CDC-approved mask and alcohol-based hand sanitizer
3. Practice social distancing of 6 feet apart. Masks should be worn when social distancing is not possible (PA Universal Face Covering Order). Example is when passing people on a trail.
4. No more than 25 people in a group (PA Guidelines). (continued)
5. Carpooling will not be provided by York Hiking Club. If personally carpooling and not from the same household, then mask should be worn.
6. All club hikes will be loop or out-and-back hikes which do not need carpooling.

 

Great American Outdoors Act: The Appalachian Trail Conservancy authored letters to Congress in which the York Hiking Club signed along with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and other clubs in the area on July 17, 2020.

 

Club Secretary Needed: The secretary position is an officer of the Governing body of the York Hiking Club, responsible for official corporate minutes, and handles official correspondence of the club. Please contact Alan Noble at or   if you are interested in the position.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
