Welcome to the York Hiking Club Newsletter, a complete monthly listing of hikes, work trips, special events and announcements.  

 

All are welcome to come on out on a hike to see what the club is all about.

 

 

A welcome sheet is handed out at every hike.  This sheet has all you need to join and get on the mailing list.

JULY 1 thru 8  – Appalachian Trail Conference, Johnson City, Tennessee. Info at www.southernhighlands2005.org

 

JULY 3 – JPJ PICNIC – Come down to the cabin for an afternoon of food & fellowship beginning with a covered dish picnic at 1:00 p.m. Please coordinate with Audrey Ormanoski what food you wish to bring to share. Call Audrey at 854-8476 by Thursday, June 30. yorkhikingclub@email.com

 

JULY 10 – SHORT HIKE -  Approx. 5 miles in Susquehannock State Park. This is a beautiful hike, also mildly strenuous with several steady up-hill trails. Bring water, sturdy walking shoes or boots. Meet at the South meeting place, York Tech (formerly Vo-Tech) at 1:00 p.m. Hike fee $2.50, leader Sandy Grove, 244-9122.

 

JULY 10 – LONG HIKE – Cancelled due to the number of long hikers either attending the A.T. Conference in Tennessee or otherwise unavailable.

 

JULY 16 – SATURDAY – SHORT HIKE –No leader. For an impromptu hike meet at the downtown lot at 1:30 p.m. MAP!

 

JULY 17 – A.T. WORK TRIP – Exact work will depend on what was accomplished in June. Possible tasks include finishing the blue trail relocation, repair of the shelter, & doing the other relocations that the park service authorized. Bring gloves, boots, lunch, & water. Tools provided. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8:30 a.m. Contact Jim Hooper at 252-3784 or TrailWork@yorkhikingclub.com for more information.

 

JULY 24 – SHORT HIKE – No leader. For an impromptu hike meet at the downtown lot at 1:30 p.m. MAP!

 

JULY 24 – LONG HIKE – Approx. 10.5 miles in gameland #106 & Weiser State Forest near Hawk Mountain. This hike features lots of beautiful rhododendron (hopefully still in bloom), streams, nice views, a fire tower, & a short stretch on the A.T. Several long gradual climbs of 400-500 ft. (not steep). Restaurant stop optional. Bring good boots, lunch, & plenty of water. We will leave the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 8.00 a.m. Hike fee $6.00. Leader Jim McCoy, 852-7570.

 

JULY 25 – BOARD MEETING – At Jim Hooper’s, 7:00 p.m.

 

JULY 31 – MEDIUM HIKE – Enjoy the woods & habitat on a 7 mile loop in Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area north of Harrisburg on Rt. 443. A moderate hike with only one long ascent. Mainly on old logging trails. Bring good footwear, water, & a snack. Meet at the North End meeting place next to Rutter's Store at 1:00 p.m. Hike fee $3.00. Leader Alan Bryant, 266-1557.

Gwen Loose needs hike leaders for the following hikes in August: 7th: short; 21st: short; 21st: long; 28th: short/medium. Please contact Gwen at 891-9967 to help. Please note: these requests are put in the newsletters in the hope of getting volunteers to lead hikes. If there aren’t any volunteers, there aren’t any hikes.

 

During the weekend of Sept. 10 & 11 we will be hiking the last 2 sections (about 8.5 miles each) of the A.T. in Pa. near the Delaware Water Gap. We will be staying in a motel in the East Stroudsburg area. We need to get a head count of how many people will attend this weekend trip for purposes of getting reservations. Please contact Jim McCoy at 852-7570 or HikingDatesAndActivities@yorkhikingclub.com if you plan on going.
